The Making of Skyline Chili

So where does Skyline Chili come from? Well, it all started back in 1912. Truly, the tale is a bit of a love story! At the time, a man named Nicholas Lambrinides emigrated from his home country of Greece to Cincinnati, Ohio.

With him, he brought all of his favorite home-cooked Greek recipes. However, he was forced to leave behind his beloved wife. In true love story fashion, he began saving up every penny to help his wife immigrate to the United States as well.

First, he worked as a cook for a railroad crew in a rundown kitchen. Later, he opened a short-order dinner restaurant. Here, he was able to make some of his amazing recipes and share them with Cincinnati locals!

After nearly a decade of working hard, Nicholas’s wife was able to finally join him in Cincinnati. Once she arrived, they started a large family and raised five children together!

Growth and Expansion of Skyline Chili

By the time World War II rolled around, Nicholas was working as a head chef for the original Empress Chili restaurant. Here, he continued to refine his recipes and develop signature tastes that locals would come from all around to sample.

Later in 1949, he was finally able to open his own professional restaurant located on Glenway Avenue. Near the top of a sloping hill (Cincinnati locals will know the place as Price Hill), his restaurant developed a huge fan base!

On Thursdays, the restaurant would serve all kinds of delicious meaty dishes. Indeed, the restaurant was so successful that Nicholas Lambrinidis opened a second restaurant in 1953.

Soon, this business expanded massively. Near the end of the 1990s, over 110 Skyline Chili restaurants were in operation. Mostly, these were located in Ohio. However, the restaurant chain stretches into Kentucky, Indiana, and even Florida!

A Legend and Legacy Continued

Even though Nicholas Lambrinidis died in 1962, his sons continue to operate the family business and expand. Effectively, they shared their signature chili recipes with the rest of the world!
